THE HUNTER TRADER TRAPPER MAGAZINE SERIES
VOLUME 2

Hunter Trader Trapper magazine was founded in 1900 by A. R. Harding. After selling the publication, Harding later returned to the outdoor press world by launching Fur-Fish-Game magazine — still in print today. Our reprint books bring back some of the best Hunter Trader Trapper stories from that golden era of outdoor writing.

Volume 2 of The Hunter Trader Trapper Magazine series continues the legacy of preserving the voices and experiences of America’s old-time outdoorsmen. This collection features articles, photos, and vintage advertisements taken directly from the pages of Hunter Trader Trapper Magazine, dating from the early 1900s through the late 1920s.

Inside these 236 pages are 32 full-length, unedited articles from legendary figures such as E.J. Dailey, E.N. Woodcock, Martin Hunter, and many others. These stories span hound hunting, trapping, big game hunting, fishing, bee tree hunting, pearling, and more. Told in the words of the men who lived it, you'll learn how they hunted, trapped, fished, built deadfalls and lean-tos, and survived in wild, unforgiving conditions.

Their accounts of blizzards, wilderness dangers, and narrow escapes offer a powerful glimpse into a rugged way of life now largely lost. These men lived simply, closely connected to the land—offering timeless lessons still relevant today.

This volume includes:

  • Five articles by E.J. Dailey, covering trapping the sand hills of Longbow for skunk, scouting wilderness traplines, and reflections on the deep draw of outdoor life.
  • Martin Hunter’s stories of netting beaver with Canadian Indian tribes and a harrowing brush with death.
  • Dick Wood’s detailed piece on outdoor clothing and practical advice for living in the backwoods.
  • Two pieces by E.N. Woodcock, including confrontations with trap thieves and running a wilderness trapline..
  • Francis Dickie’s gripping history of the Canadian Royal Northwest Mounted Police, filled with dramatic shootouts, daring manhunts, and courageous tales of service.
  • Eve Keleher's account of a wilderness vacation with her girlfriends—women who enjoyed outdoor adventure just as much as any man.
  • Multiple articles on elk hunting in the West during the 1920s.
  • Step-by-step instructions on building the wire-loop deadfall trap.
  • Walter C. Hoskin’s firsthand experiences trapping and hunting lions, bears, wolves, and coyotes in the Southwest. Living in a tent, traveling by mule and horse, he describes the life of a bounty man in the early 20th century.
  • Raymond Thompson’s pursuit of the elusive marten along a remote Canadian trapline, facing brutal conditions and personal trials.
  • Plus tales of deer hunting in the North, turkey hunting in the South, and so much more.

With approximately 85 vintage photographs showing these men in their element—posing with hounds, fur catches, game, and early automobiles—this volume is both a visual and literary journey into America’s rich and colorful past.

Step into a world where grit, skill, and simplicity defined daily life—and discover the spirit of the old-timers who made their living in the wild.
